July 31, 2007 – Sony has started shipments of its Vaio TP1, a stylish circular white PC designed specifically for the living room, to the US.
The unit, first announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, is priced at $1,599 and offers a 300Gb hard drive to complement the Media Center operating system. The Vaio TP1 includes an integrated TV tuner, and comes bundled with a matching white wireless keyboard and remote control. An HDMI connection is included for high-definition signals, as is VGA out and DVI-D.
The unit runs on a 1.83GHz Intel Core2 Duo processor, and includes 2GB of DDR2 memory, but instead of a Blu-ray drive offers only a standard dual-layer DVD writing drive. A curved slide-away panel on the front conceals 4 USB 2.0 ports and an SD-card reader, as well as the optical drive.
Wireless connectivity is provided courtesy of an inbuilt receiver compatible with 802.11 versions b and g. The Vaio TP1 is expected to be launched in Europe later this year.
