When we talk about technology in the home, we are not referring to some imagined future paradise. Of course, the movies and TV have long insisted that technology would change the way we live in the future. But if we take a quick look around, we realise that the future is already here.
If you are old enough, please indulge us and recall the modern home of forty years ago. What were the technological accessories in that home? Well, there was no computer, no high definition television set, no DVD or Blu-Ray player, and no microwave. All of these technological devices and appliances have forever changed that way we cook, receive our entertainment and gather information.
In short, they have changed the way we live our lives. No longer do homeowners focus on the wooden interior shutters or the front step. Rather, they pay more attention to the technology that is in their kitchen or family room. And in many nations, if these devices, gadgets or appliances are even a year out of date, then you’re clearly not keeping up with the Jones.
More than anything else, technology has changed the way we receive our entertainment. Going back forty years ago again, there was no such thing as expensive home theatres, DVD players or cable or satellite television.
At that time, television was free and all you needed to worry about was the reception. But these days’ families are spending hundreds of pounds a month on home theatres and special channels, not to mention Internet access and mobile phones. All of these things add up and cost families an incredible amount of money each year.
