Technology has pervaded our lives. We may not fully appreciate the extent to which we depend on it, but that does not mean that we don't! We use various forms of modern technology for almost all our needs, communication, cooking, entertainment, relaxation.
Modern homes are laden with modern gadgetry. Be it hi-fi systems, wi-fi internet portals, flat screen TVs, laptops, tablets, or Smartphones. New design paradigms, visual and aesthetic codes have evolved that define the modern age.
Gadgets today have a certain common visual appearance. They are all generally tending towards sleek and minimal. The world's thinnest TV is as thin as a pencil! Modern designs seem to gel with any kind of design aesthetic; whether it is a large home with clean cut lines and flooring made of natural stone in Hampshire , or a shabby chic studio apartment in Camden Town.
As technology evolves, gadgets move towards becoming more energy efficient and less wasteful. New ways of thinking are evolving, which make it possible to see design in a new light, that is, in terms of systems, rather than individual components.
Of course one might argue that the existence of so many gadgets for the purpose of mere entertainment or convenience is in itself pretty wasteful. However, that is a much larger topic and outside the scope of this article!
